Robert Fowler’s passion for art began early in childhood, where his natural talent for drawing quickly became apparent. Visits to the fine art galleries of Scottsdale, Arizona helped shape his artistic perspective, while a pivotal mentorship with artist Gary Swanson in 1981 introduced him to the foundations of oil painting, composition, and visual storytelling. From there, Fowler quickly developed a style uniquely his own.
Working across pencil, oil, watercolor, and sculpture, Fowler is known for his detailed approach and belief that realism best reflects the way he experiences the world around him.
Much of his inspiration comes from a lifetime spent working the land. Fowler worked as a cowboy for more than three decades, including nineteen years as a ranch manager, and those experiences continue to influence his work today. Wildlife, western themes, landscapes, aviation, and moments from everyday life all serve as recurring subjects within his art.
His process often begins with sketches and watercolor studies before evolving into finished oil paintings. A disciplined early riser, Fowler frequently begins painting before sunrise, steadily refining multiple works at once through patience, observation, and craftsmanship.
